Web14 Apr 2024 · After 1855, the traffic on the Oregon Trail declined exponentially because of two reasons. The first reason was the ending of Oregon's free land incentive in 1855. This meant that pioneers had lost the right to claim a minimum of 640 acres (258.9 ha) of free land. The pioneers had to pay for land from 1855 to 1862.
