Now that the Paul's hubs went bad they're back where they belong on the original 6 yo Phil Wood SS hub that is exactly as smooth as it was when I bought it six muddy winters ago. There are four pawls in the cassette body that engage the steel ratchet ring wedged into the aluminum hub shell. A single spring is coiled around the four pawls.
