How do scientists measure distance to stars
WebSIM will measure the positions of thousands of stars extremely accurately — scientists call this process astrometry. SIM will create a “virtual grid” of reference points on the sky through measuring the separation between stars. By studying how the positions change with time, we will be able to measure distances from Earth to the stars. SIM WebAstronomers have used Hubble to observe Cepheids with extraordinary results. The Cepheids have then been used as stepping-stones to make distance measurements for supernovae, which have, in turn, given a measure for the scale of the Universe.
